Emily Bradley Completes Her
Gold Award Project

Emily Bradley, of Girl Scout Troop 935, completed her Gold Award project on Friday and Saturday, October 17-18th.  Her project was to complete a sidewalk to connect to the Restore’s new food pantry entrance.  The sidewalk was a welcome improvement over the old system of floor mats that were used, and it will allow Restore clients easier access to the pantry without tracking in mud and dirt.

Although Emily planned the effort, and managed the funding and logistics, many, many volunteers pitched in and lent a hand to complete the project.  Emily raised over $420 from the congregation which enabled her to fund the project entirely from individual contributions.

On Friday, the track for the sidewalk was dug.  This was the hardest part of the work, taking almost 8 hours.  It involved the removal of many large tree roots.  Diane Williams proved to be the expert at root removal.  Others helping on Friday included Dewey Brown, Joe Cornell, Steve and Lauren Williams, Jim Rollinson, and Carol and Rob Bradley.

On Saturday morning, the concrete sidewalk was laid.  Gary Floyd and Jim Rollison provided the leadership during this phase of the project.  Mr. Rollison is professional contractor whose knowledge proved invaluable.  Other Saturday helpers included Joe Cornell, Steve Williams, Carol and Rob Bradley, John Nelson, Steve Penta, and Mike Plett.

Congratulations to Emily.  A Girl Scout Gold Award is similar to an Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts.  Enjoy the accompanying pictures, but better yet, visit the food pantry yourself to see the marvelous new addition!

Much of  the hard work was done on Friday.  Roots were pulled and the area for the sidewalk was cleared.  Forms were set in place, awaiting the concrete.
