Girl Scout Gold Award Project, 2010
Margaret Gosinski and Sarah Kiesow are two senior girl scouts from Troop 907. Over
the Veterans Day weekend, these two girls, with their families and friends successfully
completed a Gold Star project which beautified our church.
The Gold Star project encompassed several improvements to the RUMC church grounds:
- The metallic railings around the sanctuary were cleaned, sanded and repainted

white.
- The flower beds along the nursery building were cleaned out and were replanted with hardy perennials.
- The air conditioning system for the sanctuary was surrounded by polyethylene fencing to hide it from view and give it some additional protection from the weather.
- The walk in front of the sanctuary was reconfigured. The plantings that were inside the front walkway were removed, and their bed was paved over with concrete. Concrete was also used to repair and freshen up the existing walkway.
- A red brick cross was laid inside the the new front walkway, to add interest to the front of the church.
As a way for paying for the project, memorial bricks were sold. These bricks were embedded inside the cross. For a small fee, RUMC families could memorialize a loved one or remember a special date. Any brick could contain a message up to four lines long containing up to 21 characters per line.
The initial pictures below show the girl’s work force as they made these improvements during Veterans Day, November 11, 2010. This two-day project, which was completed on Saturday November 13th, managed to meet all of its objectives. The remaining pictures document the final results.
