Trustee Improvements in 2008.

The RUMC Board of Trustees have implemented a few improvements in 2008.  Here are some of those new projects, which you may notice as you spend some time on our grounds.
In March,  the church and parsonage mailboxes were replaced,  The new mailboxes are made of sturdy reinforced metal and are locked for increased security.
Just before Easter, the handicap ramp was constructed at the front of the church.  The labor for this project was donated by Jim Bryington and his crew of volunteers (Dewey Brown, John Nelson, Verlin O'Neal, and Joe Cornell).  Funds for this project were donated anonymously.  The ramp was installed in the space of about four days, and was available for use on Easter Sunday.  The railings for the ramp (not shown) were installed several weeks later.
In February, new tiles were laid on all the non-carpeted areas of the parsonage.  This project was actually left over from the  2007 trustees agenda.  The cost for this renovation was approximately $4,000, and was taken from the RUMC Building Fund.  No pictures of the tile are available.
The Trustees has long been concerned about the safety of parishioners who had to go up and down the stairs in the altar, and were planning to install a railing as a safety measure.  Then on May 11th, just before the beginning of the 11:00 AM Service, Jetty Miller fell on those stairs, hit her head, and had to be helped by local paramedics.  This precipitated prompt action.  Under the guidance of Jim Bryington, Dewey Brown, and Joe Cornell, a new stair railing was installed.  Members are urged to use the new railing when going up and down the altar steps.
In the middle of May, after a lengthy bid-gathering and permitting process, new roofs were installed on the parsonage, Sunday School room building and Jean Campbell (Restore) building.  The cost of the new roofs was approximately $20,000, and were paid for out of the church's building fund.  The new roofs are lighter than the old ones, which should save us on air conditioning costs.  They are guaranteed for 20 years and should greatly enhance the longevity of these three buildings.
In the early Fall, the storm sewer near the classroom complex was widened and improved, and a new grate was installed.  The purpose of this new "plumbing", installed by Jim Bryington and Joe Cornell, was to eliminate the flooding of the classroom area in a heavy downpour, and especially to keep the classroom bathrooms dry.
The Trustee's August Project was the installation of new metal signage along U. S. 301 in front of our back driveway.  This replacement sign was needed since the older wooden sign had fallen apart in January.  The cost of materials was donated anonymously, Dave Burt had the sign manufactured with reduced labor costs, and a crew of Trustees spent a September Saturday morning  installing the new shiny new sign .
